This week, Tuesday May 26, we will study the Torah portion for
Shavuot because this Shabbat is the second day of Shavuot and our
torah portion, therefore, is Deuteronomy 14:22 - 16:17, the fifth,
sixth and seventh aliyot from parasha Re'eh.
Tuesday, we'll be studying the holiday of Shavuot. Shavuot was
originally an agricultural festival for the early harvest, one of
the three pilgrimage festivals, when all males had to appear in
Jerusalem. Subsequently Shavuot became a spiritual holiday
commemorating the giving of the Torah on Mount Sinai.
I think the spiritual part goes kind of like this: Ever wonder about
the purpose of life? Ever wonder what you personally should, and
shouldn't, do? Ever wonder what society should, and shouldn't, do?
So have a lot of people. And, to most Jews, the Torah is the answer
to those questions. So when that Torah was given to us it was a
real big deal. People have questions. Here are the answers.
Of course it's not quite that simple. There are disagreements about
some of the details of those answers. But if you think about the
need to know some big questions, and then a sense that the answers
have finally come, you'll get the idea of the spiritual Shavuot.
We need to know. Here's the answer.
I wish it were that simple.
Come join us explore Shavuot, the giving of the Torah.
You're welcome to join us this week. Or any week. Or every week.
Warmly,
David
If you can, please read this week's portion before our meeting.
Our discussions are much deeper when we're all acquainted with the
material. You're definitely welcome, whether or not you've read
the portion; but most people read in advance and our discussions
proceed from there.
This Torah Study Group is a program of Congregation Or Hadash,
and is open to all who are interested in Torah Study.
You are welcome to attend any week, or every week.
We meet every Tuesday, 12:00 to 1:00 at my office,
A Center for Relationship Therapy,
